Massage Therapists and Breast Care: Easing the Controversy

Massage Therapists and Breast Care: Easing the Controversy

By Bruno Chikly, MD, DO (hon.)

Breast massage is often the subject of ardent controversy, due to the legal, ethical and physical problems associated with it. Because of this, many practitioners are reserved when it comes to working on this area of the body.

It is my hope that the information and guidelines provided in this article will ease the debate. I have taught and provided therapeutic breast care for many years using techniques that work through the lymphatic system. While I understand the reason for the controversy, I know that respectful, nonstimulating and effective techniques for breast care do exist. However, these must be practiced in a specific and controlled environment by qualified therapists who clearly understand the boundaries. Within this context and scope of practice, breast care can be safely and efficiently applied to alleviate numerous breast pathologies.

Guidelines for Therapeutic Breast Care

Through my experience, I have developed some general guidelines for application that should help to eliminate most of the controversy surrounding this treatment:

  1. Therapists should know the rules and/or laws regarding breast massage that govern their licensure in the city/state/country in which they practice.
  2. Contraindications and precautions must be respected related to the specific pathology and technique being used.
  3. Heavy pressure should not be applied to the breast tissue. All that prevents breast tissue from sagging (mastoptosis) are some minute elastic fibers of the superficial skin and a few suspensory ligaments (Cooper's ligament), which are actually comprised more of irregular layers of connective tissue fibers than of real organized ligaments.1 Petrissage (kneading) may hurt or destroy the few existing local suspensory ligaments and elastic fibers. Women with breast implants present another area of caution, as too much pressure may cause leaking.
  4. There are a number of techniques that are gentle, noninvasive and nonstimulating. Efficient work can be accomplished without ever using stimulating touch. Remember, breasts are created to nurture and support the growth of a newborn; they need to be touched in a respectful and gentle manner. I also suggest that therapists speak gently during a breast treatment.
  5. Prior to any session, therapists should clearly explain what the session will entail, along with its objectives and intentions. Have the client sign a release form consenting to the treatment. This form should explain why and how this technique is applied. The form should state that a client has the right to stop the massage at any time whatsoever.
  6. Therapists should remain aware of the trust clients have placed in them to provide breast care. Proper draping should be used at all times to provide the client maximum comfort and security.
  7. I recommend self-application techniques (self-lymphatic breast care) to clients as a way to enhance the effects of the session. The protocol is also an excellent option for clients who may not feel comfortable having the technique applied by a practitioner.

Lymph Drainage Therapy for Breast Health: Lymphatic Breast Care

Study of the body's lymphatic system shows that breast tissue contains an abundance of lymph vessels. Unlike other areas of the body, however, the breast lacks sources of external compression, such as muscles or strong overlying fascia that promote natural lymphatic drainage. As a result, fluid has a tendency to stagnate, which may lead to breast pathologies (mastopathy). This is where gentle, nonstimulating techniques can be applied to aid fluid recirculation. Of the many modalities I have studied and practiced throughout my career, lymphatic work is always the first approach I turn to in treating the breast.

Lymph drainage therapy (LDT) is a gentle, nonstimulating technique with few contraindications. It teaches practitioners how to attune to the precise rhythm, direction, depth and quality of the lymph flow. LDT is particularly effective for treating breast tissue because it involves extremely light pressure - generally no more than the equivalent weight of a dime or nickel. I am amazed at the applications and efficiency of lymph drainage therapy in treating most breast pathologies. Numerous mastopathies respond well to lymphatic breast care.

These include:

  • Menstruation-related problems: breast pain (mastodynia, mastalgia or mammalgia) and swollen breasts. Edema and lymphedema are two of the major applications of LDT.
  • Pregnancy and breast-feeding problems: engorgement (essentially constituting massive breast edema); sore nipples (transient or chronic); inflammation/infection (mastadenitis, mastitis, yeast infections, infected Montgomery's glands); milk stasis (plugged ducts, filled ducts, plugged nipple pores); wounds (nipples, areola, breast); fissures; ulceration; bruises; hemorrhage; dermatitis (eczema); and stretch marks.
  • Chronic nonmalignant lumps: commonly alleviated using a few specific strokes. Breast implant complications: acute or subacute phase; chronic phase.
  • Cosmetic concerns: mastoptosis, surgery and trauma recovery; scarring. Breast care is an important area of health that is often neglected, due to the stigmas surrounding the treatment of this part of the body.

The multiple applications and benefits of LDT for mastopathies are simply too important, however, not to be implemented. Manual lymph therapies are established medical procedures used nationwide in clinics and hospitals, and are reimbursed by Medicare, primarily for their efficiency in alleviating edema and lymphedema.

It is time for gentle and efficient breast care to be brought into the realm of accepted practice. Armed with knowledge and a clear understanding of boundaries, we can eliminate the controversy surrounding this legitimate, necessary therapeutic application.

Breast Enlargement Massage

Breast Enlargement Massage

Breast massage as a method of natural breast enlargement and breast health has actually been used for years as a means of stimulating healthy breast growth and promoting breast tone, pliability and firmness.

Breast massage is one of the best ways to help create a more beautiful bust line by helping to shape; tone and promote growth of the breast and the area surrounding the breast. Not only can moderate breast massage help to make your bust line more attractive and sometimes even grow larger, but it is also an excellent way to keep in tune to your breast health by creating awareness of any fibrous areas of possible indications of breast cancer and some have even claimed moderate breast massage can help to prevent cancer.

Breast massage has been used in beauty parlors and massage parlors, especially in Asia, as a means of healthy lymphatic drainage, breast growth promotion, and as a post operative therapy for women who have undergone mastectomies, breast surgery, or other trauma to the breast area, since it helps break down scar tissues as well as stimulate healing and tissue regeneration.

There has been much speculation that the practice of wearing a bra 12-15 hours per day by most women restricts lymph flow and healthy riddance of toxins, and apart from not wearing a bra, which is not an option for many women in today's societies, breast massage is the best way to help the lymphatic system drain these pent up toxins and help to prevent them from building up and contributing to cancer or other ailments.

By massaging the breasts on a regular basis, many women in Asia have proved it has enhanced the shape, size and overall attractiveness of their breast, while also giving them a sense of oneness with their femininity, and promoting relaxation and peace of mind, as other methods of body massage do.

Many who practice breast massage for increased breast fullness and beauty also have utilized special herbal serums or creams formulated to further stimulate the breasts into "expanding", firming and toning, creating an overall larger look and correcting sagging, droopiness and other traits deemed unattractive by other individuals.

Believe it or not, the Thai government has recently reported it supports breast massage as a means for breast enlargement and breast health, so there really must be something to this phenomenon.

Here are some guidelines for breast massage you may want to follow:

1.) Use a breast enhancing cream or serum - preferably a quality one with natural stimulating herbs and botanicals - of your choice to help prevent friction and increase the enjoyment and relaxation of the massage for a more pleasurable and therapeutic experience. This can be an herbal mixture - there are some good ones out there that really do help to promote firmness and breast tone, while creating a larger and more rounded look.

2.) Light to moderate massaging using a gentle back and forth gentle "swishing" action is best. This can be in a counterclockwise circle around the breast to help promote maximum lymphatic drainage.

3.) To gain maximum benefit and therapeutic effects, breast massage should be practiced daily, as part of a routine - perhaps when fresh out of the shower, since the skin is still somewhat moist and the room may still be steamy, for a smoother massage which may be more easily lubricated since there will still be moisture in the air. If you prefer, even several times a day can be a great benefit. It depends on what fits into your schedule. A few minutes at a time should suffice.

Application of Pueraria Mirifica

Application of Pueraria Mirifica

Pueraria Mirifica has long been traditionally prepared in the form of pills for oral intakes. Currently, the dried roots are finely ground, sometimes mixed with other medicinal herbs, packed in capsules and marketed as a dietary supplement; however, for some distributors, the capsules are prepared from the root extract. The formulation that includes ingredient list and content of each ingredient varies from one supplier to another.

Pueraria Mirifica in the form of extract has been introduced just recently. With modern extraction technology, the extract from dried roots is standardized and prepared in the form of powder and solution, the extract solution is used in cosmetic industry such as preparation of breast cream, eye gel, and skin moisturizer. The extract powder is used as a dietary supplement similarly to the traditional method, but the product has more uniformity due to the advantage of standardization.

When Pueraria Mirifica is taken as a dietary supplement, its phyto-estrogen constituents will naturally alleviate symptoms occurring as a result of the aging process and a deficiency in estrogen levels, e.g., sagging breasts, wrinkled skin, bone loss, gray hair, etc. These aging signs and symptoms will, to a certain extent, be reversed.

When applied topically to the skin, Pueraria Mirifica will be beneficial to that respective part of the body.

Various forms and preparations of Pueraria Mirifica should provide an effective and inexpensive alternative to women who wish to take charge of their own health and to enhance their beauty or utilize Pueraria Mirifica for many cosmetic purposes.

With regard to the safety and efficacy of dermal preparations of Pueraria Mirifica extract, standard dermal toxicity tests were performed in various animal species as well as in humans, and no toxicity was observed, Moreover, the efficacy of breast cream was recently evaluated in a large group of human volunteers.

Effects of Pueraria Mirifica

Effects of Pueraria Mirifica

High Isoflavones the phyto - Anti cancer
After many years of species selection, enrich with high isoflavones, the most interesting phyto-estrogens has been selected and submitted to organic farming in a huge area to guarantee the unique benefit of the phyto-estrogens.

Now this species is manufactured into our vast variety of Products and distributed in Japan, China, Thailand, Europe and U.S.A.

Our Selected Species
Phyto-estrogens especially isoflavones, enriched in Pueraria Mirifica only our selected species which this selected grade can make us differentiate from the other supplier with chemical compound approval If intake at a right dosage will support healthy female characteristics, bone structure, cardio - vascular system, breast and skin appearance in women and also health prostate function and keeps hair pattern in men.

According to our study, our researcher recommend women who are lack of endogenous estrogen including menopausal women and also mature men who are facing aging problems, should intake White Kwao Krua regularly to keep rejuvenate and the tonic felling.

What is Phyto-estrogen?
The term "natural" can refer to the source of the hormone or more importantly, it can mean that it is natural to a woman’s body; that its chemical structure is identical to the hormones produced by the human body.

The estrogens used in our formulation are the exact same molecules as the ones produced by a woman’s body. They are bio-identical. This means a woman’s body recognized it just as if she had produced it herself. It is not treated as a "foreign" molecule, her body can use it correctly, and side effects are minimal, or even eliminated!

Just as the hormone needs to be "bio-identical" to be natural, it should also be given in natural proportions. The term "estrogens" actually refers to several hormones, estriol, estrone, and estradiol being the ones natural to a woman’s body.

As a young woman, each is produced in certain amounts. When the body slows down making these estrogens, as in menopause, they should not only be replaced, but also in natural quantities. Our formulation provides all three estrogens, in the normal proportions, to basically imitate what a woman’s body produced before menopause. What is natural hormone?

What could be more natural?
One more hormone to consider “progesterone” that same young woman produced progesterone along with her three estrogens, and that same woman in menopause has quit making progesterone. Our formulation includes progesterone, also from natural sources and bio-identical, for several reasons. By replacing what is lost, a woman is getting back to what is most natural for her body. Progesterone actually helps the body use the estrogens better, so we can use the least amount of estrogens to be effective. Progesterone has been shown to actually build bone, act as a natural antidepressant, serve as a source of other hormones lost to aging; basically, making things more balanced.

Composition of Pueraria Mirifica

Composition of Pueraria Mirifica

Our researcher has started research on Pueraria Mirifica since 1991 and then later on Butea.

The compounds that make Pueraria Mirifica different from any other phyto-estrogen containing plants in the Family Leguminous are Miroestrol and Deoxymiroestrol, which possess highest estrogenic activity among the known phyto-estrogens due to structural similarity to estradiol, Miroestrol was actually the first compound isolated from this plant by a group of German chemists in 1940, but the plant had been mistakenly reported then as Butea Superba. It was later on classified as a new plant called Pueraria Mirifica Airy Shaw et Suvatabhandu.

The isolation and identification of deoxymiroestrol from the root of Pueraria Mirifica has just been reported in the February 2000 issue of the Journal of Natural Products, The authors proposed that since deoxymiroestrol is easily oxidized to miroestrol, deoxymiroestrol, not the previously reported miroestrol, is more likely to be the actual chemical constituent of Pueraria Mirifica.

However, it is very likely that the two phyto-estrogens coexist in the root of this plant. As shown below, the chemical structures of two compounds are very similar to that of estradiol, the main human estrogen.

In addition to miroestrol and deoxymiroestrol, Pueraria Mirifica also contains other chemicals that belong to isoflavones and Coumestan groups of phyto-estrogens, e.g., Genistein, Daidzein, Daidzin, Genistin, and Coumestrol that are usually found in soybeans (Table 1). However, the estrogenic activity of Miroestrol and Deoxymiroestrol is much more potent than that of soy isoflavones.

Chromene, Isoflavonoid and Coumestan derivatives in Pueraria Mirifica

Chromene: Miroestrol, Deoxymiroestrol

Isoflavones: Daidzein, Genistein, Kwakhurin, Kwakhurin hydrate

Isoflavones Glycosides: Daidzin, Genistin, Mirificin, Puerarin, Puerarin-6' Monoacetate

Coumestan: Coumestrol, Mirificoumestan, Mirificounmestan Glycol, Mirificoumestan Hydrate

Estradiol
Deoxymiroestrol
Mirificoumestan
Composition of Pueraria Mirifica

What is benefit effects of Chemical composition from Pueraria Mirifica?

While Soya and Alfalfa contains low amount and low estrogenic of the phyto-estrogens, many researches pointed out the benefit effects of those chemicals, especially to act as a Potent Anti-Breast Cancer, Anti-Prostate Cancer, Anti-Colon Cancer, Anti-Cardio-Vascular disease via the reduction of blood cholesterol and also Anti-Menopausal Syndrome. The phyto-estrogens in the Pueraria Mirifica (White Kwao Krua) is more concentrated and higher efficacy. By this distinguish property, biotechnology application has shown up for this herb.

Pueraria Mirifica - Research

Research of Pueraria Mirifica

Our researcher has started research on Pueraria Mirifica since 1991 and then later on Butea Superba. Pueraria Mirifica (White Kwao Krua) is Thailand’s endemic species found mainly in the northern and western part of Thailand and has local name as “White Kwao Krua”. The Thai vine herbal plant is grown in association with the moderate-size trees ranking from timber wood to bamboo in the deciduous rain forest.

Pueraria Mirifica Study
The enlargement underground tuber accumulates “phyto-estrogens” (Hormone from Plant) comprising isoflavones (daidzin, daidzein, genistin, genistein and puerarin) and others such as miroestrol and its derivatives, beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol, coumestrol, puerarin, mirificoumestan, kwakhurin and mirificin. The scope of our study is biotechnology of the White, Red and Black Kwao Krua. Our study has be done by traveling to many forests in many parts of Thailand to search and select for the right and best cultivar of these herbs by rely on botanical characteristic, chemical analysis, consumption history, toxicology test as well as laboratory test and clinical trial.

The result of study under controlled by researcher
According to our research has revealed that Pueraria Mirifica and Butea Superba are safe to be used in human in certain dosage as well as consumption period.

Our researcher has been conducting a series of researches covering the chemical analysis, tissue culture, mass propagation, cultivar improvement, production, product development and testing and so on for 9 years. Because this finding showed a great impact to the herbal food, cosmetic, drug and beverage industries, so he has submitted patents concerned these findings and application in both Thailand and abroad.

The result shows that our selected Pueraria Mirifica cultivar contains very high isoflavones contents and showing high anti-mutagenic effects as well as high killing effects to human mammary cancer cell line.

Nowadays nutritionists recommend the consumer to consume isoflavones regularly for the purpose of cancer protection normally found on post-menopausal and people who are Hormone Imbalance.

What is benefit of Miroestrol and its derivatives?
Miroestrol and its derivatives are also precious chemicals in the White Kwao Krua which promote estrogenic and monogenic effects to various tissues as Breast Enlargement or Breast Tissue Reformation. (See the result of Clinical study about Breast Enlargement by Pueraria Mirifica herbal and FAQ Breast Enlargement Forum ) and organs such as uterus, ovary and skin as HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy)

What is different between Soya and Pueraria Mirifica?
Soya, the main oriental food and Alfalfa, the western health food products contains lower amount of phyto-estrogens especially there is no miroestrol and its derivatives. Their benefit to the body is far less than that of Pueraria Mirifica. The researches confirm that these chemicals are potent anti-breast cancer, anti-prostate hyperplasia, anti-colon cancer, anti-osteoporosis and also anti-cardiovascular disease via the potent reduction of blood cholesterol and also anti-menopausal syndrome. Pueraria Mirifica

History of Pueraria Mirifica

Pueraria Mirifica

Kwao Krua” is a native herbal plant found in deep forests of the northern region of Thailand. It has been well known to local people for many years due to its distinguished properties and efficacy as well as regarded as the national identity of traditional medicine. Researchers and academics have applied the wisdom and knowledge of old people to reveal its miracle while many state universities have included kwao krua studies in their master degree courses. According to its classification, there are 4 varieties of kwao krua that are beneficial and can be used for medicinal, food supplementary and cosmetic purpose namelyWhite Kwao Krua (Pueraria Mirifica), Red Kwao Krua (Butea superba), Black Kwao Krua and Dull Grey Kwao Krua.

Local communities in Thailand have used Pueraria Mirifica for well over one hundred years, specifically for its rejuvenating qualities, The belief in the rejuvenating properties of Pueraria Mirifica has been passing down from one generation to another and more recently through the publication by Luang Anusan Suntara.

In May 1931, Luang Anusan Suntara published a pamphlet on the subject of "Kwao Krua" describing different ways of preparing folk medicine using Pueraria Mirifica and the claims of its rejuvenating power. It is stated in the pamphlet that Pueraria Mirifica can:

  • Serve as an anti-wrinkle agent for aged and wrinkled skin

  • Darken white hair, and increase hair growth

  • Alleviated cataract problems

  • Help with memory loss

  • Increase energy and vigor, more reflexive bodily movements

  • Increase blood circulation

  • Increase appetite, and - Alleviate sleep disorders

In 1932, Dr. A.F.G. Kerr, the Director of the Botanical Section of the Journal of the Siam Society, directed the attention of the scientific community to the fact that the tuberous roots of a Thai plant called "Kwao Krua", mistakenly identified then as Butea Superba, were considered to be of value as a rejuvenating drug.

Dr. Kerr was the first to create international awareness of the rejuvenating qualities of this plant, which subsequently led to the isolation of a potent phyto-estrogen that is unique to this plant only and to the identification of the plant as Pueraria Mirifica in 1952.

Serves as the “Fountain of Youth” for aged men and women.

How to do Breast Massage?

How to do Breast Massage?

Gentle breast massage will benefit all women and lessen the risk of breast cancer. Gentle-to-moderate kneading, rubbing, and squeezing strokes with the hands are sufficient to induce increased size, lymph and blood flow to the breast.

Breast Massage

After taking a bath, dry the breast and clean it with warm wet towel. It is recommended to notice your reflected contour to see the difference of your breast before and after applying the product.

Breast Massage

Squeeze the tube to get an amount of a 1.5 cm. coin cream for size cup A-B breast. As for cup C and up sized breast, the amount should be made proportional.

Breast Massage (Step 3)

Apply the cream around on only one breast side first. Supposing your breast is a circle, alternately use both palms to massage your breast by drawing the breast upwards starting from the crease and inwards from the side. Move your fingers in circular and upward motion around your breast to contour the breast to be round. Do so for 2-3 minutes or until the cream is fully absorbed.

Breast Massage (Step 4)

When one side is done, notice the differences of the breast contour again, comparing the massaged side with the other side, especially around the upper breast, breast base and cleavage area.

Breast Massage (Step 5)

Massage the other side of the breast using the same method.

Directon :

  • Begin with a clean dry skin.

  • Squeeze a small amount of Stherb Breast Care Products onto your finger tips (an amount equal in size to a small marble should be enough for one breast)

  • Massage directly onto the breast using a circular motion, beginning at the upwards and working your way underside. Continue massaging until fully absorbed ( 3-5 minutes ) in the morning and night.
